Tales of an island

To collect images in order to restore the storytelling function of photography.

That’s the idea behind the exhibition being staged as part of the Photography Festival, organized by the Capri Foundation and now in its 9th year, to be held in the exhibition area of the Certosa di San Giacomo. And what are images if not stories which reach beyond words to sketch the outlines of places or people? La collezione ideale” (“Capri: an island for photography. A collection of ideas”), curated by Denis Curti, is the first of three that are to be staged with different exhibition methods over the next three years. 40 photographs will be on display for this first event, selected by the many artists who have been invited to participate, hence the reference to the collection of ideas, and intended to represent the idea of the island that each photographer has communicated through his or her photos. The exhibition itinerary is structured in five sections through which the various photographers will express their own perceptions of what ‘island’ means: Diversity, Hope, Escape, Intimacy and Solitude. Indeed, in addition to being a physical and geographical place, the island is often a metaphor for human feelings. So if diversity can generate isolation, at the same time the island is an allegory for a place that offers salvation, and thus the source of hope or a synonym for escape, if the image is associated with a faraway and sometimes exotic place. But the island can also represent the intimacy of our inner circle, or solitude and the distancing of ourselves from the rest of the world.
