| Little coloured sticky labels. The story that’s told in the book Capri in etichetta (Capri in labels) (Editoriale Scientifica) is as original as it is romantic, bringing to the fore one of the island’s oldest characteristics: hospitality. It is a story told through the labels of hotels and, as Gennaro Carillo explains in the preface: “It is the labels themselves that make up the subject matter and motivation for Luciano Garofano’s book.” The little sticky labels to stick on suitcases, displaying the name of their owner and the hotel they are destined for, represent much more than just a handy way to avoid losing luggage. They are a symbol of the bond between the guest and the host. Apart from preventing awkward luggage mix-ups, the labels were also a useful way to tell the new guest’s personal history: where they came from, their previous travels, and their social class that could be deduced from the name of the chosen hotel. “All self-respecting travellers who cared about the impression they made, would eventually end up asking for that piece of paper[…]. Indeed, the simple action of applying a label was in reality “not just an act of courtesy towards the client, in the best tradition of typical Capri hospitality, but also an amazing way to promote tourism by disseminating the images of the hotels beyond the island’s shores.” And whether they were big or small, colourful or plain, elegant or shabby, the luggage labels most certainly succeeded in that purpose. It is these pieces of paper that the book has meticulously collected together and that help the author tell the story of the hotels that produced them, many of which are still playing a leading role in the history of hospitality on the island, the subject of one of the chapters of the book. It is through these labels that the author not only manages to describe the tourist development of the island of Capri, but also to trace its social profile though the various epochs, with many references also to the history of graphic design and publicity. From the pages of Garofano’s book, there emerges the clear desire to pay homage to the many Capri inhabitants who, from the 19th century to today, have helped to disseminate the legend of the island, through their ability to offer hospitality; over the centuries, this has become an entrepreneurial capacity, an authentic quality that has managed to survive through the most important historical events affecting the island.  The book is enhanced by an interesting and comprehensive appendix that gathers together historical documents and interesting facts about the unique experience of staying on Capri.

| A trip through history. Among the protagonists of the history of the island, we shouldn’t forget the hotels, as well as the professionals and entrepreneurs who have devoted their lives and hard work to these establishments. This is the focus of Ewa Kawamura’s book – Historic hotels on the island of Capri. A history of hospitality in the 19th and 20th centuries (La Conchiglia). It tells the story of the island’s tourism business through the adventures of the men and women who have made Capri hospitality a truly unique phenomenon, as a result of the structures, large or small, extinct or still in business, which appeared at the dawn of tourism on Capri, from the early 19th century until the period between the two world wars.

The art of hospitality

by Silvia Baldassarre

You can’t claim to have travelled if you haven’t visited the island of Capri at least once in your life. Because this pearl of the Mediterranean encloses within it all that an experienced traveller could want. On this small rock, history, nature, and high society manage to bring a completeness to everything you could look for in a travel experience.

hotel-gatto-bianco-capriBut the legend of Capri is not limited only to this. If, over the years, perhaps even the centuries, visitors of all kinds have arrived from all around the world, this is partly because the island encapsulates within it a capacity for welcome that is unique around the world. Just as its silhouette is exclusive, lying slyly in the Gulf of Naples, its panoramas, scents and famous places are unequalled, too, and its ability to offer a welcome and hospitality is typical and universally recognized. With the help of the travel literature that began describing the island’s historical and natural riches between the 18th and 19th centuries, the island became a sought-after destination for travellers from all over the world, to the extent that in the mid-19th century, partly also due to the development of transport and infrastructure on Capri, there was a genuine tourist discovery of the island. And so the fishermen and peasant farmers abandoned their old occupations to turn the small family inns into organized places, increasingly more oriented towards accommodating the numbers of people that grew at a dizzying rate as time went on.hotel-quisisana-capri

The Capri welcome was discreet and warm, and in addition to all the tourists, it attracted many others who chose to come and live here. The arrivals and departures also changed the physiognomy of the two towns that co-exist on the island, transforming private homes into hotels, and home kitchens into small restaurants, but also turning tradespeople into true entrepreneurs who over time, from generation to generation, have developed their activities, improving them and expanding them. The same thing that happened with the hotels and restaurants also happened with the artisan workshops involved in weaving, jewellery, and making clothes and shoes: they became small businesses and transformed their original ideas into brands that in some cases have reached beyond the boundaries of the island.

Because Capri is a brand in itself, and every visitor goes away taking with them a piece of the island, whether it is an experience in a restaurant or a pleasant memory of a hotel room, or an object or artefact that’s unique in the world.
