It is to her that we owe much of the Capri code of elegance, to her innate class and unmistakeable style. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy came to Capri for the first time in the summer of 1962 as a guest of the “princess designer” Irene Galitzine, staying at Villa Vivara.

She was to return several times, as Kennedy’s widow and as the wife of Aristotele Onassis. For many years, Capri was her favourite holiday destination and the place where, having cast off her First Lady uniform, she loved to wear low-heeled leather sandals and simple round-necked T-shirts, with a scarf on her head and large dark sunglasses. There is evidence of the “Jackie style” in the many photos that we can still see today. She adored shopping, buying sandals at Canfora, going into La Parisienne to order the short, above-the-ankle cigarette trousers that thanks to her became famous as “Capri pants”, or stopping off at Pietro Capuano’s jewellery shop.

Capri had a special place in her heart for a long time and she loved everything about the island: the afternoons in the Piazzetta, the mornings beneath the beach umbrella at Canzone del Mare, the chair lift trips up to Solaro, the walks to Villa Jovis or to the Belvedere at Tragara.

You could write a book about Jackie and Capri, a great love story: the love story of a woman and a place where she felt truly free, alive and happy.
