Gallery owner by vocation

by Antonella Maresca

In the year that no one will ever forget, the dream of a boy who has grown up is now twenty years old: the Liquid Art System by Franco Senesi. “I wanted to become an artist in the most romantic sense of the word, but here on Capri there weren’t many opportunities. I couldn’t move away from the island and I found myself going constantly, as though drawn by a magnet, to look at the space inside a large Milanese art gallery that had opened in the Piazzetta. Until one day they offered me a job.

After that day, Franco Senesi spent twelve years in the large gallery in the Piazzetta, surrounded by his great passion and enjoying it to the full. They were years of unimaginable development and experience, during which he got to know artists such as Guttuso, Cascella and Fiume.

Here he learned about the relationship with the artist in the broadest sense of the term because art galleries were the true intermediary between artists and the market at a time when, without any social media or internet, they were the only way to become known. When the gallery closed, Senesi realized that he needed the gallery as a fish needs water to survive, and bit by bit, he began to build his own.

Although today the role of the art gallery has changed, Franco Senesi has his own special way of interacting with the artist, distinctive as only Capri hospitality can be: “For me, artists are sacred and in my gallery the artist is king.”

The Liquid Art System is not just a space where artworks are displayed: here, the artists are celebrated and helped to express themselves in the best possible way. Franco Senesi advises them on the colours and size of the works and keeps them up-to-date on the latest trends that he sees on his visits to art fairs around the world.

Being born on an island can be both a privilege and a curse, depending on what use you make of this gift. So today, by making the most of his passion, experience and the opportunities for meeting people that only an island as international as Capri can offer, Franco Senesi has the most sensational shop windows in Via Vittorio Emanuele, where he only displays works by little known contemporary artists, seizing the attention of all the passers-by and often leaving them speechless.

He didn’t celebrate the gallery’s anniversary because that would mean he had reached his objective, whereas he still has many dreams to pursue. His most cherished dream is to succeed in producing artists on the island, thus evoking once more the atmosphere of a past time: that of Joseph Beuys’ Capri-Batterie.
