Quando dicono che le donne faticano a coniugare una maternità felice con una carriera a gonfie vele il pensiero vola dritto a Serena Rossi. Protagonista indiscussa del grande e del piccolo schermo, dalla soap opera Un posto al sole ne ha fatta di strada, arrivando fino alla grande fiction di Rai Uno che l’ha vista super protagonista nei panni di Mia Martini. Al cinema ha commosso tutti nei panni dell’infermiera innamorata nel film Ammore e malavita, ma anche con la tenera ninna nanna che ha cantato nella versione italiana di Mary Poppins. Ispirazione della dolcezza di quest’ultima è stato, confessa, il suo piccolo Diego che è diventato il centro gravitazionale della sua esistenza.

Parlandoci di persona risulta subito chiaro: è una forza della natura, Serena Rossi. Riesce a intraprendere percorsi diversi senza mai rinunciare alla genuinità dei suoi rapporti, alla gentilezza nell’approccio con gli altri, a quel sorriso contagioso che anche quando se ne esce con un «Che fatica» sa conquistare. Mantiene un volto acqua e sapone, il trucco non le serve, è solare e gioiosa di suo, giusto i riccioli sono domati dalla messa in piega e le scendono sulle spalle in boccoli romantici. Non perde occasione per parlare bene della sua terra, a cui è legatissima. «Le radici per me sono tutto», dice con la fierezza di una napoletana che appena può cerca con gli occhi il mare. Quando le chiedo di Capri si illumina: «È un’isola che ho nel cuore», dice radiosa.

Che cosa rappresenta per lei l’isola di Capri?

«Ha segnato tanti momenti unici e irripetibili della mia vita. Adoro tutte le isole vicino a Napoli, ma Capri per me resta magia pura».

È stato un anno impegnativo per lei…

«Non me lo dica! Sempre a correre da una parte all’altra. Per fortuna poi le soddisfazioni arrivano, su tutte avere una famiglia meravigliosa: mio figlio Diego è buonissimo e il mio compagno, Davide Devenuto, oltre ad essere ormai cintura nera di pannolini, mi aiuta e sostiene con amore e quella pazienza che occorre per star dietro a una come me, con mille idee per la testa».

È una bellissima storia d’amore, quella tra lei e Davide…

«Quando le vivi le cose sembrano normali, a ripensarci invece ancora mi emoziono. Ci conoscemmo nella Rai di Napoli, dopo una diffidenza iniziale diventammo amici, poi c’è stato un continuo seguirsi, lasciarsi, riprendersi. Finché un giorno ci rincontrammo per caso su un treno e dopo quattro mesi già convivevamo. Ora che c’è Diego l’amore si è triplicato: vivo ogni lavoro con il desiderio sincero di tornare a casa a riabbracciare stretti stretti gli uomini della mia vita. E anche Emma, il nostro cucciolo, una trovatella che con Diego è iperprotettiva e tenerissima».

Ha lavorato anche in dolce attesa. Non è che sotto sotto è una stacanovista?

«Mi piace il mio lavoro, lo ammetto, mi sono impegnata tantissimo per arrivare dove sono ora, che non è un punto preciso ma la bellezza e la libertà di poter scegliere progetti a cui tengo. Per il resto devo ancora ringraziare mia sorella Ilaria, che nella vita è la mia migliore amica e sul set dei Manetti Bros mi faceva da controfigura per le scene d’azione. Le corse che vedete sono le sue! Ma ho recitato e cantato io, e anche di gusto. Che male c’è a lavorare in gravidanza, se sei in salute ed è una libera scelta? Io stavo benissimo, ho avuto come registi due uomini intelligenti che mi hanno sostenuta e favorita in quel periodo speciale senza farmi sentire mai in difficoltà. Non capita a tutte le attrici».

A proposito di “difficoltà”, ha mai ricevuto proposte indecenti?

«Non mi sono mai ritrovata in situazioni ambigue o imbarazzanti, sarà anche per il mio atteggiamento chiaro e limpido sin da subito con tutti. Il fatto che la donna possa essere considerata ancora oggi un oggetto di scambio lo trovo davvero riprovevole, a me sono bastati sempre un po’ di educazione e qualche sorriso ad allontanare i malintenzionati».

Se dovesse riassumere il suo percorso professionale fino ad oggi in una parola, quale sceglierebbe?

«Posso dire che la parola più adatta alla mia esperienza personale e nella quale, fortunatamente, mi riconosco a pieno è meritocrazia. Mi sono sempre guadagnata ogni cosa con fatica e ne vado orgogliosa: tutto quello che ho fatto l’ho raggiunto con le mie sole forze. Mi ricordo la fatica degli inizi, i primi spettacoli nei villaggi turistici, il piano bar con papà, a 16 anni il musical C’era una volta scugnizzi, a 17 anni Un posto al sole… Non pensavo che ci sarei riuscita davvero a coronare i miei sogni, lo volevo con tutte le mie forze, questo sì. E oggi eccomi qui».

Ha mai avuto un modello di attrice nella mente a cui ispirarsi?

«Sarò banale, ma rispondo sempre Sophia Loren. Che eleganza, che fascino, che bellezza ineguagliabili. Sensuale e materna insieme, impossibile non restare a bocca aperta riguardando ogni suo film».

Parliamo di Mia Martini. Non deve essere stato facile interpretare un’icona della musica italiana che ha avuto dei trascorsi personali molto complicati. Come si è preparata?

«Ho studiato tanto, cercato attentamente tutti i dettagli per caratterizzarla al meglio. Mi sono letta biografie, articoli dell’epoca, ho ascoltato interviste, visto video-interviste, performance, mi sono completamente immersa in lei per mesi e mesi».

E dire che si trattava di un cosìddetto “progetto congelato”…

«Esatto, e io non volevo prepararmi per qualcosa che non sarebbe andato in porto, ci tenevo troppo. Quando è arrivata davvero l’occasione mi è parso quasi un miracolo: ho iniziato a studiare come una matta soprattutto per il rispetto nei confronti di una donna, della Donna che era Mia Martini».

Aveva paura di sbagliare?

«Molto, temevo di non renderle giustizia. Per questo ho detto quelle parole sul palco di Sanremo, per questo ho preferito non imitarla, sarebbe stato impossibile per chiunque. Come si può imitare quel suo modo unico di cantare? Ho cercato di immedesimarmi, di mettermi nei panni di una donna piena di emozioni, gioie, aspettative, delusioni, arrabbiature».

Cosa le rimane dentro, quando finisce le riprese di un progetto così importante?

«Ogni esperienza insegna qualcosa, ogni incontro, ogni storia. Da quella di Mia ho imparato che è importante ascoltare e guardare davvero le persone, senza pregiudizi. Aprire il cuore all’ascolto, cosa che non è stata fatta con lei. A dire il vero non la nominavano nemmeno, al limite la chiamavano “la sorella di Loredana Bertè”. Si cancellavano dalle feste se veniva invitata, i cantanti non andavano ai Festival se c’era lei. Le è stata fatta la violenza più grande e ingiusta che una persona possa subire, eppure per me è un esempio di donna tenace, fedele a se stessa. Una donna che col tempo ha imparato a dire, appunto, Io Sono Mia e decido io cosa fare della mia vita».

È un modello di donna che le è familiare? Sua madre che tipo è?

«Anche lei molto forte, bellissima, giovane. Mi ha sempre fatto ascoltare tanta musica proprio come sto facendo adesso io con mio figlio Diego. Ascoltava spesso album di grandi successi degli anni Settanta, per questo io sono fan di quelle canzoni, oltre a quelle della canzone napoletana ovviamente. Mio nonno era Giuseppe Palumbo, un autore degli anni Settanta, scriveva canzoni per Mario Merola, ci sono cresciuta».

Le sta insegnando a suo figlio?

«Provo a trasmettergli sempre l’entusiasmo per le piccole cose e per la musica. Mi auguro riprenda da me. Davide è un po’ stonato, io ho iniziato prima a cantare che a parlare!».

Certo non è da tutti avere una mamma che ha la voce della principessa del classico Disney Frozen…

«Ma lo sa che il provino per Frozen lo feci per caso? Grazie a un amico attore, e in America dissero che il mio timbro era simile a quello della principessa Anna. Adoro i film della Disney, con mio figlio li riguardo tutti, dall’inizio alla fine. Incredibile notare come facciano parte della nostra infanzia, ma anche di quella dei nostri genitori e dei nostri figli. E poi mi piacciono queste nuove principesse autoironiche che si prendono molto in giro».

Secondo lei il segreto per il successo può essere anche l’autoironia?

«Senz’altro. Bisogna saper ridere anzitutto di se stessi, senza ansie, senza sgomitare. Io ho sempre lavorato così, facendo squadra ma mai con la paura di star ferma: il treno giusto arriva sempre, e se non arriva vorrà dire che saliremo sul prossimo».

When people say that women have difficulty in combining happy motherhood with a successful career, our thoughts turn immediately to Serena Rossi. The undisputed star of film and TV, she has covered a lot of ground since the soap opera Un posto al sole (A place in the sun), progressing to the big drama on TV channel Rai Uno, in which she starred as Mia Martini. In the cinema she moved everyone with her role as the love-stricken nurse in the film Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets), but also with the tender lullaby that she sang in the Italian version of Mary Poppins. And she confesses that the inspiration for this sweet scene came from her own little son Diego, who has become the centre of gravity of her existence. Speaking face to face, it immediately becomes clear that Serena Rossi is a force of nature. She manages to embark on different paths without ever abandoning the genuineness of her relationships, her courtesy towards others, and that contagious smile that wins you over even when it’s accompanied by “What a hassle!”. With her fresh, clear complexion, she has no need of make up and is sunny and happy in herself: only her curls are tamed by blow-drying, falling around her shoulders in romantic ringlets. She has a very strong bond with her own territory and never misses a chance to praise it. “For me, my roots are everything,” she says with the pride of a Neapolitan who seeks out the sea with her eyes whenever she can. When I ask her about Capri, she lights up: “It’s an island that I have in my heart,” she says radiantly.

What does the island of Capri mean to you?

“It has imprinted unique and unrepeatable moments in my life. I adore all the islands around Naples, but Capri will always be pure magic for me.”

It’s been a busy year for you…

“You’re telling me! I’ve been rushing from one part to another. Luckily I’ve also had a lot satisfaction, above all from having a marvellous family: my son Diego is so good and my companion, Davide Devenuto, apart from being a black belt in changing nappies by now, helps and supports me with the love and patience that you need when you’re with someone like me, with a thousand ideas in my head.”

It’s been a beautiful love story between you and Davide…

“When you’re living through these things, they seem normal, but when I think back on them it still makes me very emotional. We met at the Rai in Naples, and after some initial suspicion, we became friends, and then there was a whole sequence of getting together, breaking up and getting back together again. Until one day we met again by chance on a train, and after four months we were living together. Now that we have Diego, our love has tripled: with each job I do, I have a real desire to go back home afterwards and hug the men in my life really tightly. And Emma, our puppy, too: she’s a foundling and she’s hyper-protective of Diego and very affectionate towards him.”

You even worked when you were pregnant. Aren’t you really a workaholic underneath it all?

“I admit that I enjoy my work, and I’ve worked very hard to get where I am today, which isn’t any particular point, but rather the beauty and freedom of being able to choose projects that are important to me. As for the rest, I have to thank my sister, Ilaria, who has been my best friend in life and who stood in as my double for the action scenes on the Manetti Bros set. That’s her that you see doing all the running! But I performed and sang myself, and I enjoyed it. What harm is there working during pregnancy, if you’re in good health and it’s a free choice? I felt really good, and I had two intelligent men as directors who supported me and encouraged me during that special period without ever making it difficult for me. That’s not the case with all actresses.”

As regards “making it difficult”, have you ever received any indecent proposals?

“I’ve never found myself in ambiguous or embarrassing situations, maybe partly because my behaviour has always been very clear and transparent with everyone right from the start. I find it really reprehensible that a woman should still be considered a commodity to be traded today; in my case, good manners and a smile have always been sufficient to keep people with ill intentions away.”

If you had to sum up your professional career to date in a single word, what would it be?

“I’d say that the most appropriate word for my own personal experience and which I can fully identify with, fortunately, is meritocracy. Everything that I’ve gained has always come through hard work and I’m proud of that: everything I’ve achieved has always been through my own efforts. I remember the hard work at the beginning, my first performances in tourist resorts, the piano bar with my Dad, at 16 the musical C’era una volta scugnizzi, and at 17 Un posto al sole… I didn’t think I’d really succeed in achieving my dreams, but I wanted to with all my heart, that’s for sure. And here I am today.”

Have you ever had an actress in mind as a model to inspire you?

“I know it may seem trite, but I always answer Sophia Loren. What elegance, what charm, what incomparable beauty. She’s sensual and maternal at the same time; you can’t help being left open-mouthed when you watch any of her films.”

Let’s talk about Mia Martini. It can’t have been easy to play an Italian music icon with a very complicated personal life. How did you prepare for the role?

“I studied a lot, and carefully sought out all the details so as to get the character portrayal right. I read biographies, and articles about the period, and I listened to interviews and watched video-interviews and performances; I immersed myself in her completely, for months and months.”

And they say that the project was “put on ice” so to speak…

“Yes, that’s right. I didn’t want to prepare myself for something that wouldn’t be successful: it meant too much to me. When the opportunity actually arrived it almost seemed a miracle. I began studying like crazy, mainly out of respect for a woman, for the Woman who was Mia Martini.”

Were you afraid of getting it wrong?

“Yes, very much so. I was afraid of not doing her justice. That’s why I said what I did on the stage at Sanremo, and that’s why I preferred not to imitate her; that would have been impossible for anyone. How can you imitate that unique way of singing? I tried to identify with her, to put myself in the shoes of a woman full of emotions, joy, expectations, disappointments, anger.”

What remains inside you when you finish shooting such an important project?

“Every experience teaches you something: every encounter, every story. From Mia’s story I learned that it’s important to listen and watch people properly, without prejudices. To open your heart to listen, which is something that people didn’t do with her. To tell the truth, they wouldn’t even call her by her name: at most they called her “Loredana Bertè’s sister”. They didn’t go to parties if she was invited, and singers wouldn’t go to the Festivals if she was there. She was subjected to the most vicious and unjust attacks that anyone could suffer, but for me she’s an example of a tenacious woman who was true to herself. In fact, a woman who, with time, learned to say: I’m Mia and I’m the one who decides what to do with my life.”

Is she the sort of woman that’s familiar to you? What sort of woman is your mother?

“She’s very strong too, very beautiful and youthful. She always made me listen to a lot of music, as I’m doing now with my son Diego. She would often listen to the hit albums of the 1970s, so I’m a fan of those songs, as well as Neapolitan songs, of course. My grandfather was Giuseppe Palumbo, a composer in the 1970s, who wrote songs for Mario Merola: I grew up with them.”

Are you teaching your son?

“I always try to pass on my enthusiasm for little things and for music. I hope he takes after me. Davide tends to sing rather out of tune, whereas I started singing before I could talk!”

Well, not everyone has a mum who’s the voice of the princess in the Disney classic Frozen, that’s for sure…

“But did you know that I did the screen test for Frozen just by chance? It was thanks to an actor friend, and in America they said that the timbre of my voice was similar to that of Princess Anna. I adore Disney films: I’m watching them all again with my son, from beginning to end. It’s amazing how they were part of our childhood, but also of our parents’ and our children’s childhood. And I really like these new-style, self-deprecating princesses who poke fun at themselves.”

Do you think the secret to success is to be able to make fun of yourself?

“Definitely. You have to be able to laugh at yourself above all, without anxiety, without jostling for position. I have always worked like that, being part of the team but never with the fear of standing still: the right train always arrives at some point, and if it doesn’t arrive, that means we’ll catch the next one.”
