Settant’anni senza Axel Munthe

Da settant’anni Axel Munthe non lo si incontra più per le strade di Capri con il suo inconfondibile cappello, bianco come la sua barba e i suoi baffi. Non lo si vede più passeggiare nello splendido giardino di Villa San Michele, intrattenersi con intellettuali e abitanti dell’isola o battersi in difesa degli animali. Ma del suo amore per Capri le tracce sono ancora ben visibili e forse quest’anno, in occasione dell’anniversario della sua morte avvenuta l’11 febbraio del 1949, lo sembrano ancor di più.

Da quando a diciotto anni per la prima volta approdò sull’isola azzurra il giovane Axel ne rimase talmente affascinato che ad un certo punto della sua vita decise di stabilircisi e di edificare la sua casa in uno dei punti più belli di Anacapri. Villa San Michele è una casa-museo che il medico, filantropo e scrittore svedese amò e curò fino a quando, in vecchiaia, la dovette lasciare per tornare in patria a causa di una malattia agli occhi. Decise allora di donare la Villa proprio allo stato svedese che ancora oggi ne cura gli ambienti e rende possibile a milioni di turisti provenienti da tutto il mondo di apprezzarne le bellezze.

È difficile fare un bilancio sulla personalità di Axel Munthe.

I giudizi di chi lo ha conosciuto sono contrastanti e spesso inconciliabili tra loro, di certo però è impossibile dimenticarlo anche dopo tanti anni dalla sua scomparsa.

Seventy years without Axel Munthe

It’s seventy years now since you might have come across Axel Munthe on the streets of Capri, with his unmistakeable hat, white like his beard and moustache. You no longer find him walking in the splendid garden of Villa San Michele, talking with intellectuals and inhabitants of the island, or fighting to protect animals. But the traces of his love for Capri are still clearly visible and perhaps this year, on the occasion of the anniversary of his death on 11 February 1949, they seem all the more evident. Since the time the young Axel first landed on the azure isle at the age of eighteen, he remained so fascinated by it that at a certain point in his life he decided to settle there and build his house in one of the most beautiful parts of Anacapri. Villa San Michele is a house-museum that this Swedish doctor, philanthropist and writer loved and cared for until he had to leave it in his old age and return to his country of birth, as a result of a disease of the eyes. He then decided to donate the Villa to the Swedish state, which still looks after its environments today, making it possible for millions of tourists from all over the world to appreciate its beauties. It’s difficult to take stock of the personality of Axel Munthe. The opinions of those who knew him are contrasting and often irreconcilable with each other. What is certain is that it is impossible to forget him, even so many years after his death.
