Lo stile inconfondibile di Renato Esposito nel raccontare la sua isola e il tratto altrettanto caratteristico dell’illustratore Fabio Finocchioli si ritrovano insieme nel nuovo volume della casa editrice caprese La Conchiglia. I due si erano già “incontrati” più volte, negli anni, sulle pagine di Capri review e dal loro connubio artistico sono nate storie memorabili. Cambia la veste quindi, ovvero un libro e non più una rivista, ma non cambia il contenuto, la passione né l’esito di questa felice collaborazione.

Quello che si ritrova tra le pagine del volume è un racconto di aneddoti, storie, personaggi, animali e luoghi che hanno in comune quello che si può sintetizzare in un’unica parola: capritudine.

A metà strada tra il reale e l’onirico, i disegni riproducono alcune delle immagini che il professor Esposito descrive con dovizia di particolari e che fanno innamorare dell’isola e dei suoi protagonisti, reali o immaginari che siano.

Chiudendo il libro dopo aver concluso l’ultima pagina ci si domanda se quello che si è appena letto sia reale oppure no. Una sola cosa è certa, ci si ritrova come Gaetano – protagonista del racconto che dà il nome a tutto il libro – che «Sognava il mare, il cielo azzurro attraversato da nuvole, la roccia che cambia colore per quella luce di Capri che fa innamorare i tuoi occhi».

The unmistakeable style of Renato Esposito describing his island finds a companion in the equally distinctive illustrations of Fabio Finocchioli in this new book from Capri publishing house La Conchiglia. The two have “met” in the pages of Capri Review several times over the years and some memorable stories have come from their artistic union. So while the format has changed, that is, a book rather than a magazine, there has been no change in the content, the passion or the successful outcome of this winning collaboration. The book presents a collection of anecdotes, stories, personalities, animals and places that share something that can be summed up in a single word: capritude, or the Capri state of mind.

Halfway between reality and the dreamworld, the drawings reproduce some of the images that Professor Esposito describes with such a wealth of detail and that make people fall in love with the island and its characters, whether real or imaginary.

After closing the book at the last page, you find yourself wondering whether what you have just read is real or not. One thing is certain: you will find yourself like Gaetano – the main character in the story that gives the book its name – who “Dreamed of the sea, the blue sky criss-crossed with clouds, and the rock that changes colour because of that Capri light that captivates your eyes.”

Per quanti si stiano chiedendo se fosse veramente necessaria una nuova guida turistica sulle isole del golfo di Napoli la risposta è sì. E questo non solo perché «se Capri è l’isola dell’amore, Ischia l’isola del bello, Procida… è l’isola che non c’è… un piccolo scrigno fuori dal mondo», ma soprattutto perché questa guida ha una prosa completamente nuova poiché è la summa delle visite teatralizzate che il Teatro Reale di Alessandro Rubinetti realizza sulle tre gemme del golfo.

To those of you who may be asking whether a new tourist guide to the islands in the gulf of Naples is really necessary, the answer is yes. Not just because “if Capri is the island of love, Ischia is the island of beauty, Procida… is the island that isn’t there… a little treasure chest that’s out of this world”, but above all because this guide is written in a completely new way, since it is the culmination of the dramatized visits made by Alessandro Rubinetti’s Teatro Reale to the three gems in the gulf.

In particular, the tour of Capri is organized in collaboration with Kaire Arte Capri and the writer and reader are accompanied during the three-day programme by tourist guide Annarita Di Pace.

Skimming through the pages, you realise straightaway that the book you are holding is something quite different from usual. È qui che il giovane verrà svezzato per approcciarsi ad una vita sessuale e passionale finora sconosciuta.

Tra personaggi immaginari e reali Alex, in cerca di una sua personale voce letteraria, vive il suo apprendistato professionale e amoroso con il cuore diviso tra due donne e con un maestro che si rivelerà più un satiro che una guida.

Riuscirà Alex a trovare la sua strada? Basteranno i luoghi e i panorami capresi, così ben descritti da Parini, a colmare il vuoto che il ragazzo si porta dentro? O si ritroverà ancora solo a cercare di colmare quel senso di amarezza sopito unicamente dalla lettura delle lettere del fratello perduto?

Will Alex succeed in finding his own path? Will the places and panoramas of Capri, which Parini describes so well, fill the emptiness that the young man has inside him? Or will he continue to find himself trying to assuage that sense of bitterness that can only be soothed by reading the letters of his dead brother?

Non bisogna essere un giornalista per sapere cosa sia un elzeviro, ma anche per chi fosse allo scuro del significato l’autore ne spiega la genesi e l’evoluzione in una breve introduzione.

Tanto basta per poi essere catapultati in una raccolta di scritti e articoli apparsi su vari quotidiani e riviste che trattano temi di profonda attualità pur essendo stati pubblicati in un recente passato.

Francesco Durante, intellettuale anacaprese come l’autore, definì Capri l’isola degli elzeviri e non potevano quindi mancare alcuni scritti in cui l’isola appare come protagonista. Seppure non sono scritti nel riconoscibile carattere tipografico da cui prendono il nome, questi elzeviri ricordano di certo quella prosa da terza pagina un tempo tanto diffusa e seguita nel nostro Paese.

You don’t have to be a journalist to know what an Elzevir is, but for those who have no idea what it means, the author explains the origins and development in a short introduction.

And that’s sufficient to catapult the reader into a collection of essays and articles that have appeared in various newspapers and magazines dealing with topics of great contemporary relevance, even though they were published in the recent past.

Francesco Durante, an Anacapri intellectual like the author, defined Capri as the island of Elzevirs, and hence this book could not fail to include some articles featuring Capri. Even though they are not written in that recognizable typographical font from which they take their name, these Elzevirs certainly remind you of the cultural pages in Italian newspapers, usually page three, that were once so widespread and popular in Italy.
