An American on Capri

She spends her life between New York and Capri. And as she tells her story, sitting on her terrace overlooking the blue sea that laps the Faraglioni, you realise straightaway that for her, painting and living are the same thing.jane-fletcher-capri

Jane Fletcher has a passion for art that she has always carried inside her, since she first started studying art at the Art Students League in New York at the age of 15, before going on to attend Edna Lewis’s Art Workshop in Positano. It was among that cluster of houses clinging to the rock that slopes down to the sea that she fell in love with the light and bright colours of the Mediterranean, and decided that one day she wanted to return here to live by painting.

After graduating with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Syracuse University, Jane won a grant from the Ford Foundation to study at the Otis-Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles where she obtained her MFA (Master of Fine Arts).

Studying and living in Los Angeles opened up an unexpected path for her: set design. She worked in television and her career took her to Hollywood, where she worked for twenty-five years designing and creating hundreds of set designs that earned her nominations for an Emmy Award on several occasions. But her dream was always to be able to paint in the light of the south of Italy. So she came to Capri and that became the place, alternating with New York, where she lived and painted.

And the skies of the island can all be found in her large paintings. Those of the days with low, grey clouds, those of the sunsets with their thousand shades of pink, and those of the dark blue hours when the moon and stars are still some way off.

To admire her paintings, you can just take a walk along the most beautiful streets of the island, stopping off at some of the most glamorous boutiques or the most elegant hotels which will be hosting her exhibition “Art Through Capri” from 7 June to 22 July.
