Utopie e Distopie

Utopie e Distopie

Dove i sogni qualche volta diventano incubi

Utopias and Dystopias

A beauty that seduces and befuddles, that transports you to other worlds. Where dreams can sometimes become nightmares

by Renato Esposito • illustrations by Fabio Finocchioli
The winds of utopia have always swelled the sails of this vertical rocky vessel that navigates the sea of fantasy. Like Atlantis or Thule, Capri has always been an atopos, a non-place, a kingdom of the imagination, of dreams, a mooring place for ideals of liberty.Apertura Admiring the outline of the island from a distance, like a marine sphinx or a dozing crocodile, many of the “irreconcilable” travellers on their way to Capri have yearned to rediscover a parallel world on these shores where they could imagine, think up ideas, construct a fantasy. It is a natural setting for realizing the longed-for dream life. But Capri is a two-faced island, like Janus, the god of arrivals and departures, of past and future. Its Dionysian beauty seduces and often befuddles. And so, on many occasions the dream becomes a nightmare. That much sought-after, longed-for beauty that enraptures us and transports us into other worlds, is forgotten, betrayed, sold. The zauberinsel, or enchanted island, becomes degenerate, subjugated by Chaos and the insatiable greed of the Goddess of Money. So while it may be true, as Eleanor Roosevelt said, that “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”, as we dream, we also symbolically relive our nightmares and our lost opportunities. The utopias and dystopias of Capri alternate with the passing of the years and the seasons, an eternal battlefield of dreamy passions and human egoisms.
So let’s imagine that these sheets of paper will be put into a bottle and cast into the ocean, or into a missile travelling across the universe, as we sketch out the utopias and dystopias of this suspended island in our minds.

| The Journey. The port of Naples is an elegant flowery garden with brightly coloured benches and chalets where bands play Neapolitan songs. Passengers on the ships sailing at a leisurely pace across the clear waters of the Gulf of Naples can watch documentaries about the history and character of Capri in various languages. When they land at Capri harbour, hostesses in “Capri-blue” uniforms guide passengers up to the glass walkway above. As they gaze at the beauty of the rock, moving walkways conveniently carry them and their luggage to the funicular, where they are greeted by pleasant, smiling staff. All the cars on the island are fuelled with solar energy and cannot go above 50 kph. For the nostalgic, there are ten pastel-coloured Fiat 1800s to take lovers and sweethearts on the Caprilove tours.

In the two large protected marine areas, hundreds of wooden sculls glide over the water at sunrise and sunset, seeking out the magical changing colours of the Capri grottos.
| Ultra-speedy vintage boats belonging to the Chinese multinational Mofa Dao (meaning Magical Island) take passengers to Terminal 1 of the Supermarina in 11 minutes and 32 seconds where they walk through titanium submarine galleries to arrive at the central station of the Capriunderground, which operates 24 hours a day and has 13 lines. Every day, winter or summer, 18,350 people are permitted to arrive on Capri, after a restricted number of visitors was established by ministerial decree. Before disembarking all travellers will be supplied with the Caprifutura app, which will control and monitor their stay on the island using 8G technology. For stormy days, the Korean company Blueislands has constructed a clone of the Grotta Azzurra that can accommodate 15 boats. As they pass through the magical cave of “blue fire” the oarsman whispers “La mer s’agitè e la Grotta s’appilè” (The sea is rough and the Grotto closes up).

Letture utopiche e distopiche

| Utopian and dystopian readings. If the 18th century on Capri saw the creation of the legend of the Grotta Oscura, with the travel notebooks of the British geographer Joseph Addison, it was the “tempestuous” romantics who, with the discovery of the Grotta Azzurra in 1826, gave us a new reading of Capri based on Homer. The Greek island that Tiberius loved so much is full of heroes from the Odyssey. Polyphemus, who lived in the Grotta della Paglia, was blinded with a spur of rock (the Pizzolungo); maddened with anger and pain, he hurled enormous boulders into the sea and created the Faraglioni. And it was just opposite Scopuli, the Faraglione di Mare where the blue lizard lives, that the Latin poet Virgil locates the rock of the Sirens, singers of happiness and death. But it was at the beginning of the 20th century that the island became a creative and chaotic potpourri of literary, political and artistic movements. Capri transformed into Nephente, the island of oblivion and the lotus-eaters, the magical, enchanted island of fables and, so as not to miss out on anything, the island of the dead. This gave rise to Capri archetypes that became tourist legends. The bearded Spadaro represents “the Capri fisherman” and the Bella Carmelina the “Dionysian dancer”. Thus, while the Russian writer Maxim Gorky, with his Revolutionary School on Capri, dreamed of planning a Great Mother Russia that was modern and tolerant, the Swiss Futurist Clavel debunked Capri, turning it into the Institute for Suicides. The dark German writer Hanns Heinz Ewers, who is believed to have discovered the Wundergrotte (the Grotta Bianca), transformed “the island of the degenerates” into a Gothic setting with his tales of horror. But it was the British writer H.G. Wells who, in his political fantasy story A Dream of Armageddon, published before the First World War, immortalized the utopian and dystopian nature of Capri. The two protagonists experience the utopia of their dreamlike love in a Capri transformed into a city of pleasure, with scores of mega-hotels anchored in the sea. “And northward were the broad floating stages that received the aeroplanes. Aeroplanes that fell out of the sky every afternoon, each bringing its thousands of pleasure-seekers from the uttermost parts of the earth.” A nightmare of the near future.

| Hospitality. The passengers-customers reach their little “romantic hotels” where the porters and owners greet them, smiling courteously. As they spend their longed-for holiday on Capri, each visitor will rediscover that lost joie de vivre, that missing inner rhythm as they feel themselves borne gently aloft on the vital breath of the island. Every tourist, rich or poor, will feel as if they are acting out a dream, free to enjoy their holiday without any commitments or deadlines. The rooms, majolica-tiled in the magical colours of the island, will always feature wildflowers and seasonal fruits. In the restaurants, sitting under flowery pergolas, they will be able to sample expertly cooked traditional dishes from the historic Capri cuisine, accompanied by glasses of white wine from Marocella or Migliera served by shyly smiling waiters. They will linger decadently in the Piazzetta until dawn, talking with their friends as they wait for “the blue hour”, when suspended time lets you see the world with the inner gaze of dreams.
| The multinational hotel fund “Oser et reposer” has acquired all the remaining 46 hotels on Capri. A mega-hotel called Caprimind has been built in the Gasto area, in minimalist style with 324 pod-rooms, each measuring 12 square metres and fully equipped. In addition to the pod-room, guests can enjoy a Capritour at no extra cost using augmented reality multi-colour spectacles. The services in all the hotels will be digitalized and programmed, with the customer’s online activities having been analysed over the last two years so that their every wish is fulfilled. Even breakfast, with 24 options ranging from fruit to pastries (no. 19 is the famous Capri cake), and from cold cuts to balls of buffalo-milk mozzarella, will be based on how many steps the guest takes on the island. Even sleep and dreams will be organized, by the Capridream app. By way of consolation, twice a month the few “vintage” clients will be able to admire the rising of the moon, the real one, sitting on the majolica-tiled terrace of Vietri, just a few metres from the Piazzetta, as the strains of the world-famous song by Peppino di Capri, “Tu, luna luna tu, luna caprese”, plays in the background.

| Free time. Apragopologically, Capri will go back to being the Land of the Sirens, where creative indolence reigns supreme. The eulogy to slowness will guide the minds and footsteps of fans of dawn and dusk strolls. Kalokagathìa will ensure that everyone has beautiful, healthy bodies, as they go for long swims or hikes along the old paths and become intoxicated with the light and magnetic energy of the sea and the rocks. All types of entertainment will be legitimized, and people will be able to enjoy themselves without caring about appearances, without taboos, with a dash of infantile or student-style craziness. Smiling guitarists with melodious voices will perform in the crowded restaurants once Utopie-Distopie_Capri41.qxp__more, while in the night clubs swing bands will make people pursue impossible love affairs until dawn. While staying on the island, thanks to the Blucatarsi app no one will need to use enslaving technology to be constantly connected with the world any more. Men and women, fathers, mothers and children will talk to each other again over a steaming plate of ravioli and a glass of Lacrima di Tiberio red wine.
| The Malay company Caprihappiness, which specializes in travel and leisure, linked to the Capriresort company, will have the task of planning, regulating and managing the maximum permitted time of 72 hours for a stay on the island. Yes, just 72 hours, since a Presidential Decree in 2074 established a restricted number of visitors to the island along with a maximum permitted period of stay. All 4,320 minutes on Capri will be divided up, in an escalation of Capri enjoyments. Excluding the 1,540 minutes set aside (tut tut) for sleeping and eating, 2,780 minutes will remain for leisure activities on the island. 860 minutes will suffice for visits to Certosa, the Augustus Gardens, Villa San Michele, Monte Solaro, and a tour of the island with entry to the Grotta Azzurra. 700 minutes will be allocated for swimming, sunbathing and siestas on the beach.
390 minutes for shopping in the fashion streets. 825 minutes for aperitifs, evening dancing and gossip. The last 5 minutes will be left free and can be used as you leave the island on the ferry to watch the silhouette of Capri as it vanishes into nothing.

Moda e glamour

| Fashion and glamour. A reviving Capri is transformed into an imaginative studio, workshop, laboratory and factory, Warhol style, where artists and painters create their works taking inspiration from the sensual, changeable nature of the island. Just as the Capri Futurists were a source of inspiration for the great creators of the Dolce Vita fashion, so many fashion enthusiasts, young couturiers and designers will launch the rebirth of the new fashion of the future. A new blue fashion, dreamy, provocative, scandalous and unique. The creations of this new dandyism will be on display in elegant boutiques with bright, artistic and colourful window displays. An essential and innovative elegance, inspired by the great art that Capri has given expression to over the centuries. Handicrafts will flourish again in flamboyant and colourful splendour along all the streets of the island.
| In 2092 the finance company RealCapri, which is quoted on all the leading stock exchanges around the world, acquired the name and image of Capri. For any event organized on the azure isle a commission of 21% must be paid to this “big brother” of global copyright. RealCapri’s activities range from clothing to food, alcoholic beverages and perfumes. All the products are marketed with the Faraglioni label-logo. Even the most prestigious shops along the fashion streets of Capri belong to this brand. Anyone who wants to publish a photo or image of the island has to pay a fee, although in reality, clandestine groups continue to circulate old photos of the fisherman Spadaro or the dancing Bella Carmelina. The colours of Capri fashion will be decided by three famous Chinese influencers who will be helped in their colour choices by the results of twelve algorithms. At Marina Grande harbour, an enormous shop of vintage modern antiques, called Polvere di Stelle (Stardust), will be authorised to sell 1950s- and ’60s-style designer outfits to nostalgic tourists of the second millennium.

| The houses of the utopia. On Capri, you can design theatrical villas to live in, where you can act out your life and death. The writer Bruce Chatwin wrote in his book Anatomy of Restlessness that Tuscan writer Curzio Malaparte’s house, Casa come me, Swedish doctor Axel Munthe’s house Villa San Michele, and Count Fersen’s house, Villa Lysis, were all built “on the edge of a cliff […] ‘dream houses’ where they hoped to live, love, and work wonders of creation”. The Emperor Tiberius was the first to create a villa-hermitage-fortress on the top of a hill where he could admire the infinite geometry of the stars undisturbed and listen to the echo of the song of the sirens. While admiring Villa Vismara at Tragara, the Swiss architect Le Corbusier remarked: “This house of dreams, designed without architects, was created from the passion that fought with the rock in order to cling to it.” But it was the imaginative Capri Futurist circle at the beginning of the 20th century that represented the island’s utopian and dystopian architecture artistically. The mayor and writer Edwin Cerio, at his 1922 Conference for the Defence of the Landscape, organized to defend the Capri style of architecture from the “Milanese sharks”, found «lunatic» opponents in the Futurist movement. In opposition to Cerio, who became the emblem of the “ultra-traditionalist Capri moon”, was the volcanic and eclectic Marinetti, who, together with his friends, designed superfast elevators to transport tourists to panoramic cafés on the peaks of the Faraglioni. In the Futurist manifesto, provocation is a synonym for liberty.
