La stagione del mare

Creare una casa delle stagioni per allestire mostre dedicate alla primavera, all’estate, all’autunno e all’inverno per il piacere di stabilire una relazione tra il tempo della natura e il tempo dell’arte, questo era il sogno di Luigi Ghirri, un progetto che una morte prematura avvenuta nel 1992 a soli 49 anni, ha lasciato incompiuto.
L’idea di fotografia che aveva Ghirri era del tutto particolare. L’obiettivo era utilizzato come mezzo attraverso il quale entrare nelle cose e oltrepassarle, come metafora di un viaggio. Ecco allora che dalle visite a Napoli e Capri agli inizi degli anni Ottanta, scaturirono le immagini che ancora oggi toccano il cuore di chi le osserva. I luoghi mitici dell’isola azzurra diventano infatti le tappe di un percorso, un viaggio appunto, che va oltre l’immagine del paesaggio da cartolina ma piuttosto si fonde e si confonde con la pittura e la letteratura di genere. Gli stereotipi lasciano il posto alla sensazione di trovarsi circondati e immersi in quello stesso scenario che si sta osservando. I Faraglioni e l’Arco naturale, il Monte Solaro e la Certosa di San Giacomo, così come Villa San Michele e Marina Piccola sono frammenti di memoria che uniscono il presente al passato seguendo il fil rouge della storia caprese. Una storia che va di pari passo con quella del Mediterraneo di cui Capri è una delle perle più belle. Le fotografie scattate sull’isola e all’isola, infatti, fanno parte di un più ampio progetto in cui rientrano gli scatti della Puglia e di Porto Recanati, di Ponza, Trieste e Venezia, che insieme a quelli realizzati sulla riviera romagnola e sulla costa marchigiana negli anni Settanta danno un affresco a tutto tondo del mare nostrum.
Stupore e meraviglia emergono da queste fotografie, perché anche le cose più semplici erano capaci di emozionare Luigi Ghirri che con la sua arte ha tentato di trasmettere le sue stesse sensazioni anche agli osservatori meno attenti, dando la possibilità a tutti di vedere e percepire i luoghi e le cose come lui stesso vedeva e percepiva.

Luigi Ghirri’s dream was to create a house of seasons to stage exhibitions dedicated to spring, summer, autumn and winter, for the pleasure of establishing a relationship between the rhythms of nature and the rhythms of art, but his premature death in 1992, at the age of only 49, meant that the project remained unfinished.
Ghirri had a very particular idea of photography. The lens was used as a means by which he could enter into things and go beyond them, like a metaphor for a journey. And so the images that arose from his visits to Naples and Capri at the beginning of the 1980s still touch the hearts of those who look at them. The legendary places on the azure isle become stages in a pathway, a journey in fact, that go beyond mere postcard images of the landscape, blending and mingling instead with the painting and literature of the genre. Stereotypes give way to the feeling that you are surrounded and immersed in the scene you are looking at. The Faraglioni and the Arco Naturale, Monte Solaro and the Certosa di San Giacomo, the Villa San Michele and Marina Piccola are all fragments of memory, joining the present with the past in a guiding thread that runs through the history of Capri. It’s a history that goes hand in hand with the history of the Mediterranean, for Capri is one of the most beautiful pearls of that sea. The photographs taken on the island and of the island are actually part of a larger project that included photographs of Puglia and Porto Recanati, Ponza, Trieste and Venice, and together with the photographs of the Romagnola Riviera and the Marche coast from the 1970s, they offer a 360-degree fresco of the Mediterranean sea.
Wonder and amazement emerge from these photographs, because Luigi Ghirri was moved by even the simplest of things, and he tried, through his art, to transmit the same sensations to even the least observant of viewers, giving everyone the chance to see and feel the places and things that he himself saw and felt.
